Fire Protection in Aircraft Hangars: Part 3

When constructing a new aircraft hangar, a builder may be interested to know what options they have when it comes to being categorized into a protection level. In some cases, there may be compromises that can be made that provide substantial cost savings.

Group I and Group II aircraft hangars have very similar requirements when it comes to construction and passive fire protection. These main requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Construction must be non-combustible
  • Shops and/or office areas have to be separated from the bay(s) by one-hour rated walls
  • Hangar door power must be operable in the event of an emergency
  • 3-hours walls must separate airport bays in order to be considered separate areas for fire requirements
  • Columns in aircraft bays must be sprinklered or have 2-hour protection
  • Trench drains must be large enough to carry away the full design fire flow rate of the fire suppression systems
