Project Profile

Fairchild Air Force Base

Protecting Aircraft and Personnel with SG Draft Curtains

About the Project

Fairchild Air Force Base (AFB) serves as a critical aerial
refueling center for the U.S. Air Force and other military branches. With over 8,600 active personnel and contractors, the base required a fire safety upgrade to four large aircraft hangars. Working with MJ Takisaki Inc., Smoke Guard designed and installed a system of SG Draft Curtains to meet stringent NFPA 409 standards for smoke and fire containment in aircraft hangars.

These draft curtains were installed to improve life
safety, protect military personnel and equipment, and
ensure code compliance throughout complex
maintenance structures.

Design Solution

To support the U.S. Air Force’s mission and meet NFPA 409 compliance, Smoke Guard supplied and installed 113 SG Draft (static) Curtains—covering nearly 44,000 sq. ft.— across four aircraft hangars. These systems were engineered to:

  • Minimize smoke spread and heat plume dispersion
  • Focus sprinkler activation where needed
  • Integrate with existing fire-life-safety infrastructure
  • Work within challenging ceiling truss geometries

INSTALLATION HIGHLIGHTS

The project required precision and adaptability:

    • Coordinated overhead installation using multiple boom lifts
    • Custom-fabricated curtain sections for exact truss layouts
    • Integrated penetrations for sprinkler lines and structural elements
    • Reinforced grommets, heavy-duty clamps, and tailored attachment systems
    • Onsite layout planning and sequencing to maintain efficiency and safety
