COURSE DESCRIPTION
Designated as an R occupancy, types of residential facilities vary from high-rise apartments to multi-acre campuses and everything in between. Within this setting, passive fire and smoke protection is a major concern, as is the effective use of space. The evolution of high-temperature materials has made it possible to provide minimal, high-performance, code-compliant smoke- and fire-rated protection for openings throughout the constructed environment. This presentation will touch on IBC requirements for fire and smoke protection throughout residential construction.
COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Learning Objective 1: Understand the purpose and function of building elements and the dynamics of egress in a residential facility.
Learning Objective 2: Review IBC requirements that address smoke and fire protection requirements and subtleties in this common occupancy type.
Learning Objective 3: Explore the architectural advantages and disadvantages of the available solutions for smoke and fire protection.
Learning Objective 4: Increase awareness of special considerations and common pitfalls made in designing smoke protection solutions.
