Spanx Corporate Headquarters

Fire+Smoke Protection for an Open Stairway in a Creative Office Environment
About the Project
Spanx, LLC, the prominent company that specializes in shapewear, leggings and other apparel, completed a tenant improvement project at its corporate headquarters in Atlanta’s Buckhead District, transforming the office into an open, collaborative workspace that reflects the brand’s innovative culture.
The design included an open stairway connecting floors —requiring a fire+smoke-rated opening protective solution that would meet the code requirement of limiting the passage of smoke while preserving architectural openness.
Smoke Guard’s Model 4000 (M4000) Perimeter Fire+Smoke Curtain was selected to provide discreet, code-compliant protection around the stair opening, integrating seamlessly above the finished ceiling without disrupting the design intent.
Design Solution
To meet IBC and NFPA 101 requirements within an open, design-forward office environment, Smoke Guard’s Model 4000 (M4000) Perimeter Fire+Smoke Curtain was used as a vertically deploying opening protective around a central stairway.
The system provides smoke containment while minimizing visual impact on the open sightlines and collaborative layout central to the Spanx headquarters design. With the entirety of the system concealed above the finished ceiling, the M4000 remains out of view during normal operation and deploys only when activated by the building’s fire alarm or smoke detection system.
Its textile-based design accommodates complex geometries without the need for rigid barriers or corner posts, making it well suited for modern office interiors that prioritize flexibility and architectural expression.
Design Highlights:
- 3-sided perimeter configuration for stairway applications
- 12’-0” drop length with wide-span coverage
- SGTex 30 proven fire+smoke-rated textile material utilized
- Vertically deploying system with no corner posts required
- Compatible with various applications including areas around stairways, atriums and escalators, among others
INSTALLATION HIGHLIGHTS
Installed above/flush with the finished ceiling, the M4000 system preserves clean architectural lines throughout the office. The gravity fail-safe design ensures full deployment in the event of power loss and includes battery backup, alarm system integration, and manual activation controls— supporting a reliable, unobtrusive life-safety solution within a design-forward workplace.
